Last year, as part of our communications strategy, I asked the site directors to participate in our weekly GoCamping E-news by writing about the Seven Foundations of United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries.
For 2019 the directors and I will be writing about values. Each director looked at a list of values and were asked to select seven that guide their work. As you can imagine, we had seven different lists; yet there were some words that we all shared. Together we delved into the power of these values for us and our work. As the conversation continued, we shifted our perspective on the values that we were selecting. Thank you to Peggy Lovegren, who suggested that we look at the list of values through the lens of our campers and guests, considering the top seven values that seem to be absent in their lives. What were the things that people seemed to lament about and what did they seem to need in their lives? The selection of the values on our list is a result of conversations we shared and of listening to the hearts of the people we serve.
I then chose the order of the values/needs that we selected. Our journey will begin with the need for Wonder in our lives, move to Hope, then to Joy. We will then delve into Acceptance, followed by the value of Community. From there we will explore Gratitude and then end the year with Trust. We hope that you will enjoy this journey with us and that it will give you an opportunity to explore these values for yourself and to read how we, in Camp and Retreat Ministries, are able to provide experiences of these values at our sites.
Thank you for joining us on this journey that we hope will lead to healing, a sense of answered prayer and fulfillment in the lives of campers and guests as well as our staff.
See you around the campfire soon,
